since it's founding in 2017, The Academy has been expanding its role in the community. While it began as a social club featuring guest speakers, casual entertainment and a host of activities for its members, it has grown to offer "Academy homeroom" courses wich are open to the community, sponsored community guests like queer eye's tan France, and become a force for LGBT fundraising.
The club's latests move however is up! Taking over the unit formerly occupied by State Farm, the Academy now fills all three floors of the history rich building they occupy. Owner Nate bourg celebrated the opening of the expansion saying "it was a long time in coming, since we completed the renovations right as the pandemic hit." adding that " we now have the space to add a significant number of new members, something that is important as people are able to get out again."
The expansion includes new Daytime hours, a dedicated wine bar titled "the TASTING ROOM" with in house somalier Michael wells and allows for the addition of a piano and game room that bourg calls "the perfect place for a Manhatten from our speakeasy."
The club recently used the space to host a mixer with the san Francisco black film festival and over pride welcomed special guest Mayor London Breed. "This last year was rough" bourg said, "but it's good to be backup on our feet, and we think, better than ever!"
