5 Gay-Friendly
Cocktail Spots

For the most part, gay bars the world over have never been known to be great places for craft cocktails, but that has started to change in the last decade. Here in SF, these are the go-to spots for a well-mixed drink where making out with your boyfriend isn't going to get you any funny looks.

Blackbird

Easily the best gay-owned cocktail bar in the city, Blackbird's crowd is pretty mixed these days, but their menu — and the bartending talent — can't be beat. Tell them what you like and have them make you something, and you may be impressed.
2124 Market Street

With a Twist

This rebranded Tenderloin cocktail spot wants to draw a gay crowd, and there's even a bartender who does Cher drag sometimes. The former Rum & Sugar now features drinks like the Fashionista Spritz and Catcher in the Sage.

823 Geary Street

Twin Peaks Tavern

One of the longest-running bars in the Castro — and the only one that's a historic landmark because of its big, out-and-proud windows onto the street — isn't known for any fancy modern cocktail business, but it's a great place for an Irish coffee or a well-made Manhattan or Martini.

401 Castro Street

Hi Tops
You don't find a ton of sports bars that make fancy mixed drinks with freshly squeezed juices and muddled ingredients, but leave it to the gays... Hi Tops is still going strong with its food and cocktail game, in addition to being a popular hangout, and the bartenders mix up the good stuff even when the place is jammed.

2247 Market Street

Driftwood

This gay-friendly cocktail bar in SoMa has been a bunch of much gayer things over the years. But these days it's settled into its own as a mellow weeknight spot with good beer, well-made drinks, and the monthly gay dance party D.A.D. (Dudes and Disco).
